Independence/Dependence and Real Happiness?
“When can I be on my own?” “I can take care of myself!” Words from frustrated youth who feel they have had as much as they can take and just want to be independent and happy.
Can you take care of yourself? Are you independent? Do you want to be really happy? Today celebrations have been planned across this nation, remembering 1776 when this country chose and finally declared independence, which came at great cost!
Independence is defined as self- rule or self-government indicating a measure of control over one’s immediate environment/domain. What about independence in our individual lives such as the teenager mentioned above. The exasperation heard in the voice of that young person was no doubt filled with sadness and helplessness, and happiness was attached to this important goal— of independence.
Certainly, being responsible is a principle to be taught early in the home and independence is attached however, could it be that this word independence should be reversed in the spiritual realm which will affect the physical and the mental?
The opposite of independent is dependent, not a thought easily entertained as mankind takes great pride in being “independent”! Could it be that being dependent can foster strength and self- control beyond independence?
For the young and the older, Paul has an effective formula for ” successful dependence” which more than equals independent living. This epistle to the Philippians and to us today offers:
(1) the importance of prayer
(2) the peace of God and its work,
(3) life-changing thoughts,
(4) effective flexibility, and (5) otherness.
The results “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” Read it all in Phil. 4: 6-13. Dependence on the One who can do all things!
You might be thinking, so where is the happiness? Joy is defined as deep happiness and He has it waiting for you…see Ps. 11: 16, John 15:11 and in Nehemiah 8:10- last part. More than enough to go around! So, there is joy and happiness in “successful and safe dependence”!
