Helpless, disabled, and friendless, this man had been alone for 38 years with no hope in sight. Feeling shut out from God’s mercy because the disease had to a great degree been the result of his own sin, he still refused to give up; hence a certain pool seemed his only possibility for healing.

That pool, called Bethesda, had five porches, and  was commonly believed to contain healing power during certain seasons of the year and when the water was agitated.

Even at the pool’s edge, challenges confronted those desperate for healing. Heat, which many are experiencing now right where we live, crowds who would rush forward literally trampling underfoot men, women and even children weaker than they, and having someone to lift the needy into the pool, all seemed mountainous to this poor man, as day after day he waited.

Then one day he saw the water rippling! Working so hard to get near the healing flow, he stretched his thin bony arms, but in his weakened condition he was unable to move near enough to the edge of the pool. These persistent attempts were fast wearing away his life force.

Can you identify with this helpless sufferer? Do you feel abandoned, paralyzed by your life-threatening habits, disabled, and alone, waiting by the pool for help, not knowing how long your strength will last. and needing the water of life?

He who is the water of life stands ready to invite you to take up your bed and walk! You need not crawl into a pool fighting your way through a trampling crowd, enduring the pain of every movement hoping there will be enough water!

Freedom enters here! You can experience the freedom that comes only from the Truth, John 8:32. The freedom we spoke of last month. Freedom to say yes to the one who has all the power to heal you! This freedom originates with the Master. He is the Fountain that never runs dry!

That Fountain made His way that day to the pool and there offered wholeness to this broken victim! Yes, he left the pool that day, never to return. No need! Walking in full strength, physically, mentally, and spiritually! And so can you!

And remember that even if the change you long for is not what He gives, it will be enough, for His plans are perfect! He will see to it! Allow your faith to grasp His hand and the healing you need will become evident and your love for Him will grow!

His plan is that moment by moment that living water will be available to you and will be just what you need, no matter the battles. Helpless as we are despondent and struggling, the Saviour bends over us, the purchase of His blood, and extends pity and tenderness! A win, win reality!!
