On Special Assignment – Behind Prison Walls “Bail out” were the words of a desperate young pilot. Clair knew he must take quick action if he was to save his crew. The B-24 Liberator was on fire and exiting was the only option. Soon after hitting the ground the crew was captured and two weeks later Clair found himself in prison, cold and hungry. As he and fellow prisoners made their way through the winter, new enemies appeared along with the Nazis, boredom, and helplessness. Clair’s thoughts raced, “how would he survive behind prison walls, what was ahead? This story brings to mind another young man who found himself behind prison walls in a seemingly hopeless situation. His name, Joseph. Who doing his years in prison spent time building relationships which eventually paved the way to freedom and saving many lives. He was definitely on a special assignment for God behind prison walls. In this dark and confused world, you may at times feel surrounded by prison walls and are wondering, “why am I here?” Whether your walls are made of abusive relationships, addictions, loneliness, depression, or life’s mountains looking just too high to climb, help is just a prayer away! And you may need to speak to a trusted friend, counselor, or your pastor. Listen to how God spoke to this despondent prisoner. Clair perhaps felt as you may be feeling right now. One day after growing weary of carving airplanes, he looked up at the sky and cried out, “Oh Lord give me something constructive to do”! His thoughts turned to his childhood and then one day he heard another prisoner whistling a song that reminded him of his violin. He thought how wonderful if I could just hold it again. Of course, finding a violin in the prison would be impossible! But nothing is impossible with God! (Luke 1:37) As a small penknife, slats from bunks, glue melted from the bottoms of chairs, cigarettes traded for varnish, catgut for strings from a guard and a bow found holding up a window all came together…a violin was produced! A total miracle! A special assignment! The violin music that Clair shared blessed the lives of many prisoners and ultimately paved a way for their freedom! God again! And that same God has the power to free you from whatever is holding you so you may share your special assignment! It may be the smile in your eyes, a hello or simply listening to someone’s pain. Real freedom only comes from God! John 8:32 We at Grace Abounds are praying for you and would love to hear about how God has freed you and what you have found your special assignment to be.
